Fortune on the Table

Do you have a tradition of eating auspiciously in your culture? Come set your lucky table and transfer that story into a paper mobile! For DDW26, To Be Cooked proposes a workshop called [Fortune on the Table], a storytelling event for paper-cutting and symbolic gift-giving through the lens of food. The workshop focuses on the visualisation and exchange of auspicious culinary cultures: traditions and recipes that carry wishes for luck, prosperity, or protection, using paper-cutouts. We invite you to share your food traditions and transfer them into hanging paper mobiles that encodes your story of ‘culinary luck’. By breaking down stories into visual categories — people, movement, tone of voice, occasion, and symbol; the gesture of your mom peeling a tangerine, or the tone of a celebratory toast given by your grandfather — abstract elements are then translated into a visual vocabulary of paper motifs. As facilitators, we will provide a receipt for every mobile created: a concise, printed validation of the your narrative history. The finished mobile, paired with its receipt, can be brought home and become a dangling decoration, or exchanged with others to transfer your wishes on-site.
