AJO Jazz Improvisation Workshops The Aotearoa Jazz Orchestra is pleased to present the next instalment of its jazz improvisation workshop series. Hosted by cross-genre performer Oscar Lavën, alongside a professional jazz rhythm section, these highly accessible workshops are designed to help musicians build confidence in improvisation through listening, playing, and creative exploration. Particularly suited to musicians from a classical background, the workshops are open to players of all instruments, ages, and musical backgrounds. Participants in previous workshops praised the supportive atmosphere, practical learning, and encouragement they received while exploring new musical ideas. Whether you're taking your first steps into improvisation or looking to deepen existing skills, these sessions are designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment in which to experiment, learn, and grow as a musician. Beginner The Beginner workshop is for musicians of all ages who are fairly new to jazz and improvisation and wish to get started on their journey. This workshop will offer participants an entry point into jazz styles, group listening, and the foundational elements of ensemble playing, with the goal of learning to play and improvise on a jazz standard. You'll have the opportunity to play alongside a professional rhythm section in a safe, comfortable, and supportive learning environment, where experimentation and curiosity are encouraged. Workshop places are limited, allowing plenty of opportunity for individual participation, discussion, and playing time with the rhythm section.
