They left with a suitcase in hand and everything else behind, bound for a “motherland” many had never seen. They were called retornados. Dulce Maria Cardoso was one of them. In O Retorno (The Return), she tells that story through Rui, a teenage boy starting over in a country that didn’t quite know what to do with him. The book was Book of the Year in Portugal, and its English translation won the PEN Translates Award. Not a lecture.
