Barbers and stylists prepare everything before the workday starts. We charge our tools, clean our stations, organize our products, and get ready for our clients. But most of us never prepare the body doing the work. What Is The Foundation? The Foundation is Workshop 01 of Legacy: The Barber Longevity Series, a hands-on educational series designed to help barbers and stylists better prepare for the physical demands of the profession, recognize what their body is telling them, and build more sustainable habits behind the chair. We’re starting from the ground up: the feet and ankles. During this 75-minute hands-on workshop, we’ll explore how your feet support the hours you spend standing and moving around the chair—and why preparing your body before a long workday matters. The goal isn’t to diagnose injuries or promise a quick fix. The goal is to help you: Prepare. Notice. Respond. Prepare your body before long periods of physical work. Notice fatigue, tightness, compensation, and recurring discomfort earlier. Respond with better movement habits, recovery tools, adjustments, or professional help when needed. You’ll leave with a practical routine you can begin using before your next shift and a better framework for paying attention to your body throughout your career. What We’ll Cover • Why barbering should be treated like the physical profession it is • Why warming up before your first client matters • How the feet and ankles contribute to the way you stand and move behind the chair • Common work habits that may create unnecessary physical stress • A shoes-off foot and ankle movement session • Simple self-awareness and movement exercises • A hands-on tool lab using massage balls, toe spacers, balance tools, and other resources • A simple 5-minute Barber Pre-Shift Reset • Practical ways to add more movement into your workday • How to recognize patterns worth paying attention to instead of simply ignoring discomfort You’ll Leave With • A simple pre-shift warm-up you can use before work • A better understanding of your feet and ankles as your physical foundation • The Legacy Workbook: Foundation Module to document what you notice and experiment with after the workshop • Access to the Barber Pre-Shift Reset guide and video • Practical tools and movements you can test in your own routine • A clearer framework for knowing when to adjust, recover, investigate further, or seek professional guidance Who This Workshop Is For This workshop is designed for barbers, stylists, grooming professionals, and students who spend long hours standing, cutting, bending, reaching, and repeating the same movements throughout the day. You do not need to be injured or experiencing pain to attend. In fact, Legacy is built around becoming more intentional before your body forces you to pay attention. If you already experience recurring discomfort, this workshop can help you become more aware of your habits and give you questions and observations to bring to an appropriate healthcare professional when necessary. New to Legacy? We recommend beginning with The Foundation, but each Legacy workshop is designed so you can attend individually. Future workshops will build upward through: 01 — The Foundation Feet + Ankles 02 — The Base Hips + Lower Back 03 — The Working Position Upper Back + Shoulders + Neck 04 — The Tools Hands + Wrists + Forearms 05 — The Reset Pre-Shift + Recovery 06 — The Long Game Mind + Career Sustainability Attend one workshop or work your way through the complete Legacy Series. The goal isn’t just to hurt less. It’s to stay capable of doing your best work for years to come. What to Bring • Comfortable clothes you can move in • Clean socks or bare feet for the mat portion • Water • Your phone or something to take notes with • Your current work shoes if you’d like to assess them during the workshop About Your Instructor David Thomas is a barber stylist with more than 16 years behind the chair. After years of long workdays and eventually dealing with foot pain and plantar fasciitis while cutting full-time in Hollywood, David began paying closer attention to how he prepared for work, moved throughout the day, and recovered afterward. Legacy grew out of that ongoing process of learning, experimenting, speaking with other professionals, and asking a simple question: How can we take better care of the barber so the barber can keep doing the work they love? Important Note Legacy workshops are educational and are based on personal experience, movement practice, barber-specific work habits, and ongoing research. This workshop is not medical treatment, physical therapy, or medical advice, and it does not replace care from a physician, physical therapist, podiatrist, or other licensed healthcare professional. Please move at your own pace and avoid any movement that causes pain. Date: Monday, September 28th Time: 12:00 PM Length: Approximately 75 minutes Location: TEN Haircare Studio Spots Available: Limited attendance to keep the workshop hands-on
