High-Impact Instruction for Real World Problem Solving Grades K-6

Real-world problem solving that works! Learn problem types, strategy progressions, and how to support all learners across Tiers 1–3. Indiana’s K–6 math standards reference “real-world problem solving” thirty-one times, but many students still struggle to make sense of problems, choose strategies to efficiently solve, and persist through the sometimes arduous task of story problems. So what does it actually take to teach problem solving in ways that work? In this workshop, you’ll build a clear, connected understanding of how students develop as problem solvers, and what to do at each step. Participants will: • Explore the 14 problem types found in our standards across whole numbers, fractions, and decimals • Understand how students’ strategies develop from direct modeling to counting to derived facts, and how to support that progression in Tier 1, 2, and 3 instruction. • Use models and representations to make sense of problem structures and support student thinking about and comprehending the problem itself. • Analyze real student work to determine next instructional moves. • Strengthen student engagement and discourse during problem solving. • Connect problem types and strategies to standards and assessment expectations. You’ll leave with practical tools, instructional clarity, and a stronger ability to respond to student thinking, so all learners can access, engage in, and succeed with rigorous mathematics. --- ESC and CIESC Member Discounts Is your school district a member of CIESC or another ESC in Indiana? Cancellation Policy Cancellations made before the payment settles (usually within 24 hours) will be 100% refunded. Cancellations made 7 calendar days or more in advance of the event date, will receive a 90% refund. Cancellations made less than 7 days of the event will receive a 75% refund. Any cancellation made on the day of or after will NOT receive a refund. In-Person Events Please note this event will be held in person.
