When the Essay Stops Working: Assessment in the Age of AI

Detectors are being abandoned. A half day on what to assess instead, and what your current policy exposes you to. About this event: AI detectors are being dropped. Several major universities have backed away from them over reliability problems and bias against students still learning English. Indiana has no state rule on any of this. A 2025 bill that would have kept districts from penalizing a student on detector evidence alone died in committee, which means your detector policy is currently your own exposure and nobody else's. This half day comes in two parts. The first is a clear-eyed look at where detection actually stands and what your current policy does and does not protect you from. The second is the useful part: how to redesign assessments so that whether a student used AI stops being the thing your grade depends on. You leave with revised versions of your own assessments rather than examples of somebody else's. Bring two or three you already use and expect to work on them. Agenda: 9:00 to 10:15: where detection actually stands, and an honest audit of your current academic integrity policy. 10:15 to 10:30: break. 10:30 to 12:00: redesigning your own assessments. Bring two or three you already use. Who should attend: Secondary English, social studies, and science teachers, department chairs, curriculum directors, assistant principals, and anyone at central office who owns or is about to rewrite an academic integrity policy. Pay via Invoice If you need to pay for your registration via invoice, you may do so by selecting your ticket and then choosing the invoice option at check out. Invoices will be sent to the Accounts Payable contact on file for your organization upon completion of the event. Cancellation Policy Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours prior to the event. You must cancel your registration and request a refund via Eventbrite. If you selected pay by invoice, an invoice will not be issued. If you selected pay by credit card, a refund for the ticket price minus Eventbrite fees will be issued back to the original form of payment. The refund may take up to 7-10 business days to process. Any cancellations or no-shows on the day of the event or after will NOT receive a refund. Registrations may be transferred to another staff member in your school/district.
