Home for Horror: Sleepy Hollow (1999) · R

A gothic murder mystery brings the legend of the Headless Horseman to life in Tim Burton’s atmospheric take on Sleepy Hollow. Tim Burton’s lavish, ink-black adaptation of Washington Irving casts Johnny Depp as a squeamish New York investigator dispatched upstate to solve a string of Headless Horseman killings in the village of Sleepy Hollow. Christopher Walken, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, and a genuinely gnarly Christopher Lee round out the cast. Emmanuel Lubezki’s Oscar-nominated cinematography paints the Hudson Valley as a fever dream in blues and grays. We are contractually obligated to screen this film — often — and glad of it. Bonus! As a special added bonus, before select films, we’ll be screening the new 30th Anniversary 4K restoration of SEASON’S GREETINGS (1996), the creepy cartoon short from Michael Doherty, director of TRICK R’ TREAT (2007), featuring the first appearance of that film’s “Sam” character. Many thanks to Michael and Minor Demons, Inc for allowing us this opportunity to provide you with this bite-sized fright.
