After their undersea existence is done, what else can these unused shells become? Turning oyster shells into lime isn’t a new idea. Oyster-shell lime was once produced in Hong Kong’s island and coastal communities, connecting this humble marine material to a much longer history of local making and building. In this workshop, we’ll revisit that old material tradition through a contemporary creative process. Come find out in this hands-on workshop, where you’ll turn locally collected oyster shells into a natural, lime-based palette. Then, we’ll use that palette to paint a textured artwork inspired by the Chi Ma Wan Peninsula’s coastlines and communities. Your contribution will become part of a larger collective artwork, co-created with other workshop participants. Join us in rolling up your sleeves and getting better acquainted with this humble island resource, while creating a beautiful and lasting celebration of our ties to each other, to the landscape, and to the region’s natural and industrial history.
