Beyond Comprehension: Reading Science, Learning Science, and Curriculum

Master the Science of Literacy and Learning via retrieval, spacing, and the pillars of reading to build actionable lesson plans. About This Event: During the workshop, you will actively participate in the techniques shown to increase learning and retention, including retrieval practice, spacing, and interleaving, to experience firsthand how memory consolidation works. We will bridge the gap between neurobiology and the classroom by deconstructing the five pillars of literacy and exploring how to manage cognitive load to prevent student burnout. After participating, you will leave with a research-informed lesson plan that integrates vocabulary, morphology, and metacognitive "think-alouds". You will be equipped with a toolkit of strategies—such as frequent low-stakes quizzes and "brain dumps"—designed to interrupt the process of forgetting and transform your classroom into a site of high-engagement, evidence-based learning. Who Should Attend: Educators and instructional leaders interested in literacy in grades 3 -12. --- ESC and CIESC Member Discounts Is your school district a member of CIESC or another ESC in Indiana?
